Good afternoon President of Indonesia Bapak Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono and your Excellency Ibu Anny Yudhoyono,
His Excellency the Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Bapak Muhammad Hatta Radjasa and Ibu Oke Hatta Radjasa,
Excellencies Coordinating Ministers and Ministers of Second United Indonesia Cabinet and their supposes,
Excellencies Ministers of Defense from ASEAN countries and ambassadors from ASEAN countries,
His Excellency Dr. Surin Pitsuwan Secretary General of ASEAN,
Excellency Governor of Bali Bapak I Made Mangku Pastika and Ibu,
Other members from the regional government,
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen
Good morning to all of you and may the peace of the Almighty God be with us
First of all, on behalf of the Indonesian government, and all those involved in the ASEAN Fair, let me welcome you to the launch of the ASEAN Fair 2011. This is indeed the first time ASEAN is having a big and long celebration of ASEAN switch culture heritage. As chair of ASEAN this year, Indonesia took the initiative of having a one month long ASEAN Fair in order to strengthen the social culture pillar and to increase the awareness of the people of ASEAN, regarding our differences and similarities in our cultures, traditions and way of life. It is only through greater understanding between our people can we become truly a one ASEAN community.
Indonesia hopes that the ASEAN Fair will be a catalyst for similar events in the future, and lead to further discussion, dialogue, and greater interaction amongst the people of ASEAN, about our culture, traditions, arts, and creative products. This will eventually lead to the collaboration and cooperation between us, towards not only an ASEAN identity but as well to have the potential to carry economic value through our collaboration and cooperation, with the final end to achieve the vision of a people-centered ASEAN which benefits all of the people of ASEAN.
His Excellency Bapak President, ladies and gentlemen,
As the vice chair of the implementation team under the National Coordination Team for ASEAN Fair 2011, allow me to report on the process and implementation of ASEAN Fair. Today we will launch the ASEAN Fair and this marks the beginning of a series of activities which will continue until 24th of November. And the activities will be conducted in Bali as well as in Jakarta. Through the ASEAN Fair we hope to strengthen the tie that binds us together through shared cultural heritage. We do so by conducting a series of activities which we celebrate the richness of ASEAN’s cultural heritage, arts, performances, and creative industries. The process we hope will enhance a greater awareness amongst us not only our differences but also our similarities.
And we hope that the sight, sounds and taste of ASEAN will also resonate more widely in the world. This is the reason that the logo for ASEAN Fair which we will shortly see in the break is “Hello ASEAN”, which is a universal and popular greeting, understood by all, old and young, and is intended to be friendly and embodying the spirit of ASEAN. It is also intended to reflect a down to earth representation of a people centered ASEAN and not just an ASEAN represented by ministerial and leaders meeting, but an ASEAN for the people.
Let me acknowledge at the outset that the implementation of ASEAN Fair 2011 would not be possible without the vision and inspiration provided by the president himself, the guidance of the Chair of the Coordination Team, the Minister for Coordination of the Economic Affairs, Bapak Muhammad Hatta Radjasa, and the Vice Chairs who are the Coordinating Ministers of Political and Security and People’s Welfare.
Furthermore, ASEAN Fair 2011 would not be happening today if not for the support of the 27 ministries and agencies in the government and regional government of the Badui region and Bali province. And I would like to also acknowledge that the Ministry of Trade has been instrumental in supporting the infrastructure and the number of main activities for the one month long ASEAN Fair. And of course also thank you to the Ministry of Defense who would contribute to the acrobatic air show which we will see in a short while.
Of course we also thank all the ASEAN countries and ASEAN secretary for their participation in ASEAN Fair 2011 despite the short preparation time, we acknowledge your enthusiasm and your support and on behalf of the Indonesian government I would like to thank you. I would also like to acknowledge the presence of the Ministers of Defense of ASEAN, perhaps they also have a role to play to defend and of course develop the rich culture, heritage, and creative people of ASEAN. We believe, I hope Ministers of Defense in your retreat you can reflect on this, we believe this is the secret weapon of ASEAN, and one which is not easily exhausted in a long run as long as we nurtured and provided with conducive environment.
Last and not least I would thank to all groups on the society who supported the ASEAN Fair from the women organization such as SIKIB, the Solidarity Association of the Wives of the United Indonesia Cabinet and DEKRANAS and DEKRANASDA, the National Handicraft Body and Regional Handicraft Bodies, the private sectors and the state-owned enterprises especially BTDC—Bali Tourist Development Center—who is in charge of this location in Peninsula Island and PLN—State-Owned Electricity Company—who has generously provided us with electricity that we need to run the ASEAN Fair, the various museums in Bali, Museum Pasifika, Rudana and so on, who are participating in this program. And of course to the artisans, musicians and creative people of ASEAN who have been involved in the event organizer. The process of the preparation of the ASEAN Fair has truly been a collaborative and cooperative experience.
His Excellency President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono, ladies and gentlemen,
Today our program starts with the ogoh-ogoh which is used in Bali I believe to chase away the evil spirit. And in this modification of the ogoh-ogoh, the logo “Hello ASEAN” would be carried. And it was created and crafted by artisans with pieces of glass. Let us say that we not only want to chase away the bad spirit but we want to capture the positive spirit of ASEAN to always be with us. You will also see ten decorated vehicles representing each ASEAN country with their icons. And please don’t ask why these icons and not this icon for particular country. We will have a long debate on this. It is not always easy to pick an icon that represents each of the ASEAN country. And this is actually evidence of the richness of our culture. The vehicles will be traveling around Bali today, and later also on November 1-3 intending to promote the event that we are going to celebrate for one whole month. And they will be included in the calendar of event.
And also close the event today with the air acrobatic which is supported by the Minister of Defense. I just want to thank all the people that were involved in the ASEAN Fair which, in just two days program, involves 500 people from the creative industry. The people ranges from the participants who are craftsmen who made the icon that you will see on the floats, and the artisans who are performing and the creative team who develop the concept and the professional event organizer who make sure that everything happens.
Today there will also be the opening of the ASEAN Painting Exhibition at the Museum Pasifika in Nusa Dua Bali which will go on until November 23rd. Museum Pasifika will provide Indonesian and ASEAN delegations with free entrance for the whole month. Museum Rudana and so on will also provide free or discounted entrance fee. There will also be a textile exhibition in Jakarta. And on October 30th be having a parade which will carry the largest flag from each ASEAN countries which will be dragged toward the National Monument. You will see a huge ASEAN flag in Monas on October 30th to remind people of ASEAN and the big event that we will be having which is the summit in November.
The major of the activities will be focused on Peninsula Island, starting from November 1st to 23rd; there will be 2 open stages which will be used for performing traditional as well as contemporary music, performing art, and dance. There will also be a covered dome tent which will house the ministers of ASEAN and all the ASEAN economists. Each ASEAN country is given space in the dome tent to show the best of the best from their countries. And we will be having a series of ongoing activities for one whole month on music as well as culinary and we will have a Painting Exhibition from ASEAN children. There will be 1000 paintings from ASEAN children which will be on display to provide a window from a unique perspective of the world of life in ASEAN countries. I am sure when we see the paintings we will see many similarities between the way of life in all the ASEAN countries.
We will also continue with an ASEAN exhibition from 16th to the 19th November in the Westin Hotel which will be promoting the creative industries such as handicraft, books, fashion, processed food product, and so on. Furthermore, outside of Nusa Dua, we will have the ASEAN Film Festival and co-branding activities, such as the flora and fauna exhibition as part of the summit festival which is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture.
His Excellency President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, ladies and gentlemen,
Of course it is just a sample of activities, the full program and a calendar event is available. And in closing I would like to thank again the support and cooperation, and collaboration by all parties in preparing the ASEAN fair. I do hope that our cooperation will result in greater awareness by all and eventually brings ASEAN to the people. Of course this is just the beginning and a catalyst. We hope that this event will be followed by many more similar ones, to foster a greater understanding and awareness that we must have between us. And that it should reach the youth which make up 30% of ASEAN population as they are the future of the ASEAN community.
Finally, we hope to nurture the ASEAN identity, create a caring ASEAN community and carry on the spirit of collaboration and cooperation so that we no longer just say “made in ASEAN” but we say “created in ASEAN”. With that note I will end my report and I would like to now invite the president to give his remarks and guidance regarding the ASEAN Fair and I would also like to at this point thank the president for taking time out of his business schedule to launch the ASEAN Fair today.
Thank you very much,
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om
